From elearningpost.com an article that draws from UCD practices and discusses how to apply it to elearning. In “Empathic Instructional Design,” Maish Nichani goes over what the current problems are with most online courses and examines some of the causes.

Through ethnographic techniques, designers can learn what makes classes successful in the physical world. Then, as one professor explains, “propose something that surpasses them. Teaching more isn’t teaching better.”

And as Will Thalheimer points out, interactivity isn’t enough.
